The mountains changed from bright orange to brown to a dull frozen purple. Mom and Dad gave me back my computer and phone just before Christmas. The laptop’s plastic and the phone’s buttons felt like my skin but gone off. I texted Jill Merry Christmas. She didn’t respond. I closed my eyes.

The vultures pick at my insides. The fire melts my skin. My cells devour themselves.

I checked the Forum. Four more suicides since I’d been away. Mike Corrigan, Alonzo Reeves, Jessica Plain, Zach Herring. I clicked through the pictures. Their shapes dangled or slumped, captured from all the essential angles. I clicked through, clicked through, clicked through.

They found Crazy Bob frozen to a riverbank. His pockets filled with stones and a cinderblock tied around his neck with an orange extension cord. I didn’t know how to feel about that.

We had Dad’s side of the family over for Christmas: Mémé and Pépé, Aunt Marie and Paula, Uncle Ray. Ashely had gone to Oklahoma with her boyfriend and his family. I ate three Ativan, texted Tyler saying I wouldn’t be able to talk until later, then went to the living room and smiled smiled smiled.

Uncle Ray hopped up out of the recliner, a Santa hat bobbing on his scalp. “There’s the big girl.” His hug reeked like warm gin.

My phone chimed. I switched it to mute and put it back in my pocket.

Mémé and Pépé seemed barely alive, and when they ate eggs they looked like monsters. My phone chimed again.
